• About 3/16 inches long when mature
  • Rusty-red or mahogany
  • Oval, flat, and thin when unfed
  • More elongated, plump, and red when full of blood
  • Unable to fly


  • Eggs are laid in cracks and rough surfaces
  • Egg mature to adult stage in 21 days
  • Adults can live almost 1 year


  • Hide in cracks and crevices during day (prefer wood and paper over stone or plaster)
  • Feed on humans, birds, hogs, etc, at night
  • Feed on blood for 3 to 10 minutes
  • Fill harborage areas with molted skin, feces, and old eggshells, causing a ‘stink bug’ smell
